The rise of blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens has opened up many possibilities for gaming. One of them is land ownership. Players can buy a piece of land in a virtual world and that makes them a landowner. They would acquire an NFT, that represents ownership over a piece of land. However, the purpose of that land is still bound by the rules of that particular game or world.

For example, owning the deeds to a village in Mirandus allows players to setup an economy within the rules of the game. That means they can open shops, a tavern and a blacksmith. Land in Axie Infinity functions different: as decorations on the land give players boosts in battle. At the same time virtual worlds like Cryptovoxels and Decentraland give the owner a lot more freedom, but even freedom comes with restrictions and limitations.
