Tonight at 9PM UTC on Wednesday February 10th Decentraland is hosting its first game jam of 2021 in partnership with Atari. Visitors of the event will be able to grab a POAP and some exclusive Atari wearables. In addition the event is the start of a two week game jam themed after some of Atari’s most recognizable classics.
Atari has provided assets from a couple of classic games, including Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, Pong and Tempest. Images, textures, sound files and ROM files are available to dive into for those aspiring to join the game jam. In addition there’s an entire catalog with IPs that could inspire a cool idea for a game inside Decentraland.
Ten finalists will share 20 thousand dollars worth of MANA, ATARI tokens and land parcels. The grand prize is $5000 and a land parcel, while those placed in 6th to 10th place will win 500 dollars in crypto tokens. You can visit the Atari arcade here.
Atari building in two virtual worlds
Last year Atari announced their partnership with The Sandbox. They are building a big arcade center in that particular virtual world. Last month they announced a similar move in Decentraland.
In the arcade in Decentraland visitors can play classic games like Pong, Break Out!, Asteroids, Missile Command and Centipede. Atari has already promised to bring more games to the virtual arcade. In addition the winners from the first 2021 game jam will have their games showcased inside the Atari arcade building.
What is Decentraland?
Decentraland is a virtual world build on the Ethereum blockchain. Consumers can buy land within this world, and build anything. Currently ownership over virtual land is highly speculative, and the value of these lands increased significantly over the past year. Decentraland launched in February, and players can now visit by using a web browser on a desktop or laptop.
Within Decentraland people can build all kinds of businesses, including shops for in-game items, art galleries and games. Decentral Games and Metazone are some of the companies that create games within Decentraland. For example, Metazone is selling complete game installations. Landowners can earn money from those creations, while game creators earn a share of the revenue.
