The metaverse is a collaborative environment on the internet where different people, applications and tools can operate and share information. The metaverse is a digital or virtual environment, and people can visit this metaverse through all kinds of media: mobile phones, desktop computers, virtual reality helmets. However, the ultimate shape of the metaverse would be a 3D environment or a virtual world that’s connected to many other virtual worlds, thus forming a metaverse through which people can travel using one online identity.

A metaverse would require open economies and open software standards. Only then it would be possible to allow interoperability between different virtual worlds. Some virtual worlds claim the label ‘metaverse’, but we can only talk about a metaverse when there’s interoperability on different levels. Blockchain technology already enables this for cryptocurrencies and economies, but also for non-fungible tokens.
