Decentraland is a virtual world running on the Ethereum blockchain. Ownership over the land parcels (LAND) is stored on Ethereum, while the native governance token MANA is an ERC-20 token. Decentraland is a virtual world that can be accessed through any desktop web browser, using a Web 3 wallet like for example Metamask.

A decentralized autonomous organization, or DAO, is responsible for the future of Decentraland. The developers of Decentraland handed over the controls to the DAO in 2020, but are still actively working on the project.

All 90 thousand land parcels have already been sold. Those who own land can build anything they want, ranging from virtual stores or galleries, to interactive installations or even full feature games. People who want to have their own land, will need to buy it on the secondary market.

Anybody who visits Decentraland can enjoy all it has to offer for free. However, certain games have an entrance fee, but also allow users to win digital items. In addition there are gambling casinos in Decentraland, attracting quite an audience on special event nights. By participating in events, players can win or buy special clothes for their avatar. Even though Decentraland only exists since February 2020, these digital clothes have become quite popular collectibles.
