Cartoon creator Justin Roiland, co-creator on Adult Swim’s Rick & Morty, will launch his first crypto art piece on Nifty Gateway next week. A full collection consisting out of several original artworks will go live on Tuesday, January 19th. Once again Nifty Gateway is bringing in artists from outside the crypto space to introduce them to this rabbit hole.

“We are thrilled to welcome Justin Roiland to Nifty Gateway for his first-ever crypto art release. The full collection features several original artworks from Justin and will go live next Tuesday, January 19,”, Nifty Gateway wrote on Twitter. Which in turn was retweeted by Roiland with the note ‘crypto art drop $NFT’.

Nifty Gateway has been home for a variety of prominent art drops in recent months. This week world famous dj Deadmau5 collaborated with Mad Dog Jones on several artworks, which generated more than 350 thousand dollars in revenue. At the same time Carl Cox is dropping his first artworks on Nifty Gateway this Friday. Last month Mike “Beeple” Winkelmann sold over twenty artworks combined with a physical collectible for more than 3.5 million dollars.

What is crypto art?

Crypto art or digital art has been around for many years. However, without the existence of blockchain technology it was impossible to verify authenticity and rarity. Now digital art is connected to a token on the blockchain. That way buyers can see how many copies of a certain artwork there are, and whether the product is original.

The concept of seeing a digital image as art, is one thing. However, for many people it will be a challenge to consider digital images as valuable. Consider this: The Mona Lisa is worth many millions of dollars. If I would paint the Mona Lisa in an exact copy, it would be worth only 50 dollars. Because we all know where the original version is. Being able to verify the authenticity and rarity of a piece of art is crucial.

Some people don’t care about the Mona Lisa. It’s just a painting. They are happy to download an image for Google Images, print it on canvas and hang it in their living room. Others want the real deal. The same rules go up for digital crypto art.
